Custom Plaques in NYC

Custom plaques in cast bronze, cast aluminum, etched and engraved metal, acrylic and glass. Business and office plaques, building dedications, donor recognition and memorial plaques. Made to your wording, in the size, shape and finish you need, and fixed to last where it is going.

A single name plate or a wall of donors.

The one sign that has to be right forever

Most signs get replaced. A rebrand, a new tenant or a move, and the old sign comes down. Plaques are different. A dedication, a memorial or a building’s founding date is expected to stay on the wall for decades, and people will read every word.

That changes what matters. A spelling mistake on a door sign is a nuisance. A misspelled name cast into bronze is permanent, and it is on a plaque that someone will stand in front of to remember a person. The wrong date on a cornerstone plaque will outlast everyone who noticed it.

So the most important step in making a custom plaque is not the casting or the engraving. It is the proof. We lay out the wording at full size and ask you to check every name, date and title before anything is made.

Custom plaques by material

Material What it gives you Works best Worth knowing
Cast bronze Raised letters, deep texture and real weight. The traditional plaque. Building dedications, memorials, historic and outdoor plaques. Very durable outdoors. The finish is protected with a clear coat.
Cast aluminum The same raised, cast look, lighter and less expensive. Outdoor markers, building plaques, park and campus signs. Does not tarnish. Usually painted or anodized.
Etched brass, bronze or stainless Fine lines and small text recessed into flat metal and filled with color. Office plaques, donor plaques, detailed logos. Sharper detail than casting, with a flatter look.
Engraved metal Text cut into the surface. Name plates, awards, small office plaques. Clean and quick to produce. Best for simple layouts.
Acrylic Clear, frosted or colored, printed on the back or engraved. Business and office plaques, recognition, modern interiors. Light and affordable. Scratches more easily than metal or glass.
Glass Depth and clarity, with etched or printed text. Premium office and donor plaques. Heavier than acrylic and suited to interiors.
Photo plaques A printed or etched photograph with text. Memorials, recognition, history plaques. Outdoor photo plaques need a durable, UV-resistant process.

Cast, etched, engraved or printed

The method matters as much as the material. It decides how the letters look, how much detail survives and how the plaque ages.

Cast

Molten metal is poured into a mold made from a pattern of your layout. The letters and border stand up from the surface, and the background is usually textured and darkened so the letters read clearly. Cast metal plaques have the depth and weight people associate with a permanent plaque. Very small text and fine logo detail can soften in casting, so layouts are designed with that in mind.

Etched

The design is chemically etched into flat metal, and the recessed areas are filled with paint or enamel. Etching holds fine detail, small text and complex logos better than casting. The plaque looks flatter and more contemporary.

Engraved

Text and graphics are cut into the surface by a rotary tool or laser. Engraving suits name plates, office plaques and awards with simple wording, and it is usually the quickest method.

Printed

Full-color printing on the back of acrylic or glass, or on metal, allows photographs, gradients and brand colors. Printing on the reverse of clear acrylic protects the print behind the sheet.

Custom memorial plaques

A memorial plaque is often ordered at a difficult time, sometimes against a date that matters: an anniversary, a dedication or a service. We keep the process simple and give the wording the care it needs.

  • Wording first. Names, dates, titles and any short inscription, checked at full size by the family or organization before anything is made.
  • Material for the setting. Outdoors, cast bronze or aluminum lasts best. Indoors, etched metal, acrylic or glass can suit the room.
  • A photograph, if wanted. Photo plaques can carry a portrait, made with a process suited to indoor or outdoor display.
  • Permission for public places. A plaque on a park bench, tree or other public or shared property usually needs permission from the organization that manages it. Check before ordering; they may set the size, material and wording.
  • Timing. If the plaque is needed for a particular date, tell us at the start. Casting takes longer than etching or engraving.

Custom building plaques

Building plaques mark a name, a date, a dedication or a piece of history. They are fixed to facades and lobby walls and are expected to outlast the people who commissioned them.

  • Scale. A plaque on a facade is read from the sidewalk. Letter size and layout are planned for that distance.
  • Fixing into stone and brick. Cast plaques are usually fixed on concealed studs set into drilled holes, so no fixings show on the face.
  • Security. Outdoor metal plaques can be a target for theft. Concealed, tamper-resistant fixings make them harder to remove.
  • Landmarked buildings. Adding a plaque to a landmarked building or one in a historic district may need Landmarks Preservation Commission approval.

Sizes, shapes and finishes

Custom metal plaques and custom acrylic plaques are not limited to a rectangle with a border.

  • Any size. From a small name plate on a desk or door to a large dedication plaque on a building.
  • Any shape. Rectangles, ovals and circles, arched tops, or a shape cut to follow a logo or outline.
  • Borders and edges. Single or double-line borders, beveled edges, or none at all.
  • Backgrounds. On cast plaques, a textured background in a dark or colored finish so the raised letters stand out. On etched plaques, recessed areas filled with color.
  • Metal finishes. Satin, polished or patinated, protected with a clear coat.
  • Logos and artwork. Your logo, crest or seal reproduced in the plaque, with fine detail better suited to etching than casting.

Mounting

Method How it looks Best for
Concealed studs No visible fixings. The plaque sits flat on the wall. Cast plaques on stone, brick and masonry.
Standoffs The plaque stands out from the wall on metal caps. Acrylic and glass plaques, modern interiors.
Visible screws with caps Decorative caps cover the screws. Easy mounting and removal.
Adhesive No fixings, no holes. Lightweight indoor plaques on smooth surfaces.
Posts and bases The plaque stands on its own post or base. Gardens, parks, memorials and campuses.
Desk or easel stands Freestanding on a surface. Awards and presentation plaques.

Wording to installed plaque

  1. Send us the wording. The text, any logo or photo, and where the plaque will go. A photo of the wall helps.
  2. Material and size. We recommend a material, method and size for the setting and give you a price.
  3. Layout proof. A full-size proof showing every word, letter size, border and finish.
  4. Sign-off. You check every name, date and spelling. Nothing is made until the proof is approved.
  5. Making. Cast, etched, engraved or printed, then finished and protected.
  6. Delivery or installation. Delivered ready to mount, or installed by our team with the right fixings for the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Plaques

What is the best material for an outdoor plaque?

Cast bronze and cast aluminum are the most common choices for outdoor plaques, because they hold up well to weather. Bronze is the traditional, heavier option. Aluminum is lighter, less expensive and does not tarnish. Both are protected with a clear coat or painted finish.

What is the difference between a cast and an etched plaque?

A cast plaque is poured into a mold, so the letters and border are raised above a textured background. An etched plaque is flat, with the design recessed into the metal and filled with color. Casting gives depth and weight. Etching holds finer detail and small text better.

Can you include our logo or a photograph?

Yes. Logos, crests and seals can be cast, etched, engraved or printed. Fine logo detail usually suits etching or printing best. Photographs can be printed or etched, using a durable process for outdoor plaques.

Can names be added to a donor plaque later?

Yes, if the plaque is designed for it. Donor walls and recognition plaques can use separate name plates on a main panel, with space left for new names. We keep the layout, so added plates match the originals.

How are plaques mounted on brick or stone?

Cast plaques are usually fixed with concealed threaded studs set into holes drilled in the wall, so no fixings show on the face. Tamper-resistant fixings add security for outdoor plaques.

Can I put a memorial plaque on a park bench?

Only with permission from whoever manages the bench or park. Public and shared spaces usually have their own rules for plaques, and they may set the size, material and wording. Check with them first, then send us their requirements.

How long does a plaque take?

It depends on the method. Engraved and printed plaques are usually quickest. Cast plaques take longer because a pattern and mold are made first. If you need a plaque for a particular date, tell us at the start.

What do you need to get started?

The exact wording, any logo or photo, the size you have in mind, and where the plaque will go. A photo of the wall or location helps us recommend the material and mounting.
