Etched Plaques in New York

Custom etched metal plaques in brass, bronze, stainless steel and aluminum. Building and office plaques, nameplates, donor and recognition plaques, instruction and safety plates. Standard or reverse etched, color-filled, and finished for indoor or outdoor use, with fine text and logo detail that stays sharp.

One nameplate or a matched set of two hundred.

When the detail matters more than the depth

Cast plaques have weight and depth. They also have limits: small type fills in, fine lines in a logo soften, and a long paragraph of text starts to look crowded.

Etched plaques exist for exactly those cases. Because the design is etched into flat metal rather than poured into a mold, small lettering stays crisp, thin strokes stay thin, and a detailed logo or crest looks like the artwork it came from. A plaque that carries a lot of words, such as a history, a set of instructions or a list of names, is usually better etched than cast.

The trade-off is a flatter plaque with less relief. For most office, building and information plaques, that is the right trade.

How etching works

The artwork is transferred onto the metal as a protective mask. The exposed areas are then chemically etched, leaving a shallow recess with clean, sharp edges. Those recessed areas are filled with paint or enamel, and the surface is finished and protected.

The result is a flat plaque with the design set into the metal rather than printed on top of it, so it does not wear off with handling or cleaning.

Standard etched or reverse etched

Style What is recessed and filled What stays bare metal The look
Standard etched The text, logo and border The background Dark or colored lettering on a bright metal face. Classic and very legible.
Reverse etched The background The text, logo and border Bright metal lettering on a dark or colored background. Bolder, and close to the look of a cast plaque.

Reverse etched plaques suit building and entrance plaques where the metal lettering should stand out. Standard etched plaques suit text-heavy plaques and nameplates, where dark letters on a light face read most easily.

Etched, cast or engraved

Three methods that are often confused. Each suits a different kind of plaque.

Aspect Etched Cast Engraved
How it is made Design chemically etched into flat metal, then color-filled. Molten metal poured into a mold of the layout. Design cut into the surface with a rotary tool or laser.
Surface Flat, with shallow recesses. Raised letters on a textured background. Flat, with cut lines.
Detail Very fine: small text, thin lines, complex logos. Softens very small text and fine detail. Good for simple text and outlines.
Best for Text-heavy plaques, nameplates, logos, instruction and safety plates. Building dedications, memorials, historic plaques. Name plates, awards, short text.

Choosing the metal

Metal Look Where it works Worth knowing
Etched brass plaques Warm gold tone, polished or satin Offices, lobbies, entrances, law and professional firms Tarnishes over time unless lacquered. Outdoors it needs more care.
Etched bronze plaques Deeper, warmer and darker than brass Building plaques, dedications, memorials, outdoor use Very durable outdoors, and ages gracefully.
Etched stainless steel plaques Cool, brushed or polished silver Modern interiors, entrances, equipment and safety plates Highly corrosion-resistant. Brushed finishes hide fingerprints.
Etched aluminum plaques Light silver, often anodized Nameplates, equipment tags, large sets, interior plaques Light and economical. Suits quantity runs.

For exterior plaques, bronze and stainless steel are usually the safest choices. Brass works outdoors with a protective lacquer and some maintenance.

What etched metal plaques are used for

Use Examples Why etching suits it
Building identification Building names, addresses, entrance and tenant plaques Crisp lettering and logos, with reverse etching for a bold look.
Office plaques and nameplates Suite plaques, executive nameplates, door and desk plates Fine type at small sizes, in finishes that match the office.
Donor and recognition Donor lists, sponsor plaques, awards Long lists of names stay legible.
History and information Building histories, dedications, interpretive text Paragraphs of text stay readable without crowding.
Safety and instruction Operating instructions, warnings, equipment and panel labels Durable, permanent and resistant to cleaning and handling.
Maps and diagrams Site maps, floor plans, schematics Fine lines and small labels are reproduced accurately.

Safety and equipment plates

  • Permanent information. Etched text is set into the metal, so instructions and warnings do not rub off.
  • Built for the environment. Stainless steel for kitchens, plant rooms and anywhere cleaned with harsh products or exposed to moisture.
  • Laid out to your standard. If your safety signs follow a standard such as ANSI Z535, we lay them out to match its colors, symbols and signal words.
  • Fixed to stay. Screw, rivet or adhesive fixings chosen for the machine, panel or wall.

Colors, finishes and mounting

  • Fill colors. One color or several, matched to your brand. Black is the most common, but any color can be used.
  • Metal finishes. Brushed, satin or polished, sealed with a clear coat to protect the finish.
  • Borders and edges. Etched borders, beveled edges, rounded corners or a plain edge.
  • Shapes. Rectangles, ovals, circles, or shapes cut to follow a logo.
  • Backing boards. Etched plates can be mounted on wood, acrylic or a larger metal panel for a layered look.

Mounting

Method How it looks Best for

Frequently Asked Questions About Etched Plaques

What is an etched plaque?

An etched plaque is a flat metal plaque with the design chemically etched into the surface. The recessed areas are filled with paint or enamel, so the text and graphics are set into the metal rather than printed on top. Etching holds fine detail and small text very well.

What is the difference between standard and reverse etched plaques?

On a standard etched plaque, the text and graphics are recessed and color-filled, and the background stays bare metal. On a reverse etched plaque, the background is recessed and filled, and the text stays bare metal. Reverse etching gives bright metal letters on a dark background.

Is an etched plaque the same as an engraved one?

No. Etching uses a chemical process to recess the design evenly into the metal, which suits fine detail and large areas of fill. Engraving cuts the design with a tool or laser, which suits simpler text and outlines.

Can etched plaques be used outdoors?

Yes. Etched bronze and stainless steel plaques hold up well outdoors. Brass can be used with a protective lacquer and some maintenance. We recommend the metal and finish for the location.

How small can the text be?

Etching can reproduce much smaller text than casting, which makes it well suited to text-heavy plaques and detailed logos. We check that every line stays legible at the plaque’s actual size on the proof.

Can you use more than one color?

Yes. Etched plaques can be filled with one color or several, matched to your brand colors.

Can you make matching sets of nameplates?

Yes. Nameplates, suite plaques and equipment plates can be made in sets to one design, and we keep the artwork so later orders match.

What artwork do you need?

A vector file of your logo, such as AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF, and the exact wording. If you only have a low-resolution image, send it and we will tell you whether it can be used or needs redrawing.
